Moleskine Drawings

The invention of photography in the 1840s threatened the role of figurative painting in art, giving the incentive to Modern Art. The craft of early photography was relatively slow, expensive and left to specialists. However 180 years later, the ease and minimal cost of digital photography has stimulated a deluge of images almost impossible to process, digest and store.

In contrast the slower process of recording a landscape either by drawing or painting often results in an image that is a more informed personal record. The more meaningful elements are prioritised by the brain whilst the distracting ‘visual noise’ is excluded. These first impressions are sometimes best drawn on a small scale, capturing the serendipity of the spur of the moment.
