On Black Paper
Beginning a drawing with black paper poses an immediate challenge, it reverses the normal process of observing whist making images on white. This switch at the start of a drawing helps to create fresh images, especially useful for landscapes, as the mind is constantly reinterpreting the view to the image on the page. White, either as ink or colour pencil, becomes very precious, whilst the black may give an immediate sense of solidity and mass as dark colours merge out of the background allowing bright or light colours to sing!
