Spirit of the Woods

Continuous deforestation has affected the landscape and the British for millenia. This reached a climax in the middle ages as charcoal burning fuelled the creation of cast iron. However our deep and perhaps primitive bond to trees is still strong, as demonstrated by the well publicised battles to save woods or individual trees from destruction.

Woods are appreciated for many different reasons – their history, ecology, visually and a sense of wellbeing. They also contain a magical spirit that needs protecting.
